If you stock your system with fry you have to put them in about mid to late March. Trout prefer the cold water and do not survive long if the water is above 20°C on a regular basis. It will take about 9 months to grow them out to plate size.
Stocking your Aquaponics system with fingerlings – (fingerling size)
If you stock your system with fry you have to put them in about May / June. Trout prefer the cold water and do not survive long if the water is above 20°C on a regular basis. It will take about 4 to 5 months to grow them out to plate size.
Stocking your Aquaponics system with yearlings – (yearling size)
If you stock your system with yearlings you have to put them in about August / September. Trout prefer the cold water and do not survive long if the water is above 20°C on a regular basis. It will take about 2 to 3 months to grow them out to plate size.
Calculating Aquaponics system capacity for stocking
The common way to calculating stocking numbers can be worked out by calculating the volume of the fish tank then dividing that by 10. So a 1000 litre fish tank would hold 100 fish. However those figures are more for semi commercial levels, for backyard system its best to divide the volume by 20 so the system is not so crowded. So a 1000 litre fish tank would hold 50 fish.
